On March 22, 2019, Global Metropolitan Studies and the Social Science Matrix hosted the first annual Bay Area Urban Politics workshop, co-organized by Jeffrey Paller (University of San Francisco) and GMS Co-Director Alison Post. The event drew over thirty faculty and doctoral students from Berkeley, Stanford, U.C.L.A., U.C. Merced, U.C. Santa Cruz, and the University of San Francisco. GMS doctoral students Christopher Herring (Sociology), Lana Salman (City & Regional Planning), and Matthew Stenberg (Political Science) presented their dissertation research at the conference. The day closed with a talk by Professor Jessica Troustine (U.C. Merced) on her new book Segregation by Design: Local Politics and Inequality in American Cities (Cambridge, 2018).
